Basic Qualifications

Applicants seeking employment with the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office should be aware of certain requirements that are inherent with any law enforcement profession. Honesty, maturity, self-discipline, initiative and an exceptional ability to deal with people and traumatic events are expected of all applicants.

Applicants must be able to legally work in the United States and must be able to effectively communicate in written and spoken English. The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office is an alcohol, drug, and smoke free work environment.

Deputy Sheriff / Deputy Recruit Positions

  • Deputy Recruit - Minimum Age for Applicants is 21 years by academy graduation
  • Deputy Sheriff – Minimum Age for Applicants is 21 years
  • High School Diploma, or GED*
  • P.O.S.T. Certified or certifiable**

Additional Specific Disqualification Factors for Deputy Sheriffs / Deputy Recruits include, but are not limited to:

  • Any felony conviction
  • Any conviction involving an act of domestic violence
  • Illegal Drug Use – Marijuana use will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis
  • Illegal Drug Use – Other illegal drug use in the past five (5) years
  • Driving Record - This includes receiving a DUI within the past five (5) years, having your driver's license suspended for any reason within the past five (5) years, and having five (5) or more tickets within the past five (5) years
  • Outside activities deemed a conflict of interest
  • Revelation or discovery of assaultive behavior
  • Documented record of prior poor work performance
  • Unsuccessful completion of any basic requirement
  • Inability to perform the essential functions of the position
  • Police history – type, frequency and nature of contact(s)
  • Providing false or misleading information during the application / selection process
  • *Certain positions may have additional or specific education requirements
  • **Colorado Police Officer Standards and Training Certificate

Civilian / Professional Positions

  • Minimum Age for Applicants is 18 years.
  • High School Diploma, or GED minimum.*
